Peer Mentoring

2015 Fall Mentoring Dinner

Since 2002, the WISE Mentoring Program has helped new WISE students with the transition to UIC by pairing them with experienced WISE students.

How it Works

  • At the beginning of each academic year, a first-year (freshman or new transfer) student and a WISE student who has been at UIC for at least one year are paired up according to their major, common interests, and career goals.
  • The WISE Program office will contact all mentoring pairs once a month to check in as well as suggest fun activities to attend.
  • The WISE Program office will also plan activities for mentoring pairs to attend.
  • Applications for becoming a mentor and requesting a mentor are NOW OPEN.

Our Results

Mentors Responsibilities

  • Meet with their mentee once a month.  This can happen a variety ways: meet for coffee, attend a WISE event together, go for dinner, visit a local museum, help each other out on homework.
  • Be a friendly contact on campus for your mentee. Be a big sister.
  • Contact the WISE Program office with any concerns they have with their partner.
  • Mentors can use this activity as an Honors College Activity. Please discuss with the WISE director as early as possible.

Mentees Responsibilities

  • Contact their mentors with any questions: Don’t know when the last day to drop a class?  Don’t know who your academic advisor is?
  • Meet with your mentor once a month.
  • Contact the WISE Program office with any concerns they have with their partner.

Training Session

  • There is a training session in the fall semester to acclimate students to the idea of mentoring and how to get the most out of the experience.
  • You must attend one of these training sessions. If you cannot, please let WISE know ASAP at .
  • It is best if you can attend with your mentor/mentee, but if that is not possible, please come alone.

Years End Celebration

  • All mentoring pairs are expected to attend the End of Year Celebration, usually held in April each spring.
  • All mentees are also asked to nominate their mentor for the UIC WISE Mentor of the Year Award. Details will appear here in the spring semester.
